Innovative Approaches

School-based health centers, presented by Dr. Dina Romo from Columbia University, highlighted innovative strategies not yet widely adopted in Africa. The conference emphasized the importance of addressing men's mental health and early fatherhood, acknowledging how environmental factors shape adolescent perceptions and outcomes.

Coll
Knowledge Gaps & Sensitization

A critical finding was the widespread lack of knowledge about contraceptive tools, their usage, and purpose. Misconceptions including the use of medicines as contraceptives or abortion solutions highlighted urgent needs for sensitization. Dr. Morrish Okello addressed these gaps on HIV self-testing kits and contraceptive availability. Social media's influence on adolescent behavior and tobacco use, presented by Dr. Seya Sushimitha, further demonstrated evolving health challenges.

Coll2
Technology & Peer Support

The conference examined innovative uses of technology to combat stigma associated with chronic illness. WhatsApp support groups demonstrated promising results in improving morale and quality of life for young people with similar conditions. Additionally, the impact of conditions like sickle cell disease on school attendance and work capacity was explored in depth, revealing the multifaceted nature of adolescent health challenges.

SAHU's Legacy & Impact

The conference revisited SAHU's growth trajectory and support systems, celebrating life-changing stories from adolescents served through the Friday Clinic. The Adolescent Clinic at Mulago was highlighted as a critical safe space where adolescents can access comprehensive care and psychological support without judgment.
